I am looking at a 1970 DS. My question is: would that date of manufacture automatically make it a DS1? Is there anything else to look for?

A sail and matching hull number would help. Look for a single hull, DS IIs had double hulls. Look for the beer well in the transom that doubles for an outboard bracket. Wooden floor boards and coamings and open cuddy design.
